Petitioning: Xiamen Police

Photographs emerged online of visitors at the Haicang Zoo, in the City of Xiamen, riding on the back of a giant tortoise. The zookeeper used a screwdriver to prod the tortoise or rap on its shell if it failed to move.

The zookeeper charged money for this act and made a pretty profit. She explained that despite being against the rules, some tourists “couldn’t control themselves and jumped on the tortoise”. HA HA, that’s really clever! She, as a zookeeper should have known better!!

It’s even been said that the tortoises were crying during their ordeal!

Classified as an Aldabra giant tortoise, the one seen in the photographs is currently 60 years old and can live to be 400!

This particular one was a diplomatic gift given by Mauritius to the City of Xiamen in April 2012. It is an endangered species once thought to have been driven to extinction in the 1800s. And now people are riding on it’s shell!

Shame on you! Sign the petition and let’s get justice for this noble creatures!
